It might have worked hundreds of years ago when public education was established, but it's outdated and doesn't work today.
Video games, Swink said, are complicated and can better equip us to be prepared for the complexities of life. Try to explain Civilization to your grandmother, for example, and it becomes clear that the game requires you to take a vast sea of information and narrow it down to make important decisions each time you play. As a result, someone who plays Civilization walks away having learned something, and in a way that's much more complex than the way information is presented in school.

Sally Le Page has taken first prize at the Guardian and Oxford University Press (OUP) Very Short Film competition.
She was awarded ￡9,000 towards tuition fees for her minute-long film about evolution in a ceremony at the Guardian's London headquarters. Three runners-up each received a ￡250 voucher for OUP books.
The competition challenged students to make films inspired by the Very Short Introduction book series – no more than 60 seconds long. Thousands of Guardian readers voted to select four finalists, with the judging panel deciding the winner.
Chair of the Judges, Judy Friedberg, the Guardian's universities editor, said: "All those that were selected for the final 12 were excellent and I'd like to congratulate everyone who made the cut on their talent and skill.
"Sally Le Page's film on evolution is an energetic and uplifting piece, with strong use of typography and great communication skills. In fact, Sally would make a wonderful TV presenter."
After winning the prize, Sally said: "I wanted to make my film about evolution because life is the most interesting thing in the universe – and we can't understand life without understanding evolution. Most people know what evolution is, but not how important it is. And that's what I wanted to get across in my video."

The TV Cut is They havent even offered me a DVD; minute shorter than the theatrical version. This means out of  minutes they cut only  minute of gore, violence, and nudity. My how times have changed for horror films since There are also treats outside of the playful alternate dialogue choices. Dean Cundeys camera work not only allows you into  perspective, but dazzles us with light that sets a mood; a mood that a film like Halloween so desperately needs.
 The film also takes us out of sunny southern California yeah thats California and places us in the sterile setting of a hospital. Gone are the green leaves they are everywhere and the dark corridors of your nightmares come very much to life The TV Cut is only on a separate DVD. Thankfully, it is also in pristine condition. If you play it in a Blu-ray player it will never look better.

The Hunger Games DVD is experiencing phenomenal sales in retailers across the United States. Huge crowds showed up for Hunger Games midnight release parties across the nation on Friday night, and retailers were still reporting strong sales on Saturday. A clerk at one Wal-Mart store told us, “It’s the fastest I’ve ever seen one of our DVDs sell.”
Many retailers we checked this morning are now completely sold out of the Hunger Games DVD. The Hunger Games retailer exclusive DVDs seemed to be the first to go with many stores only having standard Blu-ray copies remaining.While Lionsgate has yet to put out an official press release, indications are that sales are going very well. There is a post on the official Hunger Games facebook page which says The Hunger Games 7 million and counting Because the number didnt refer to what it was talking about, some tweets and facebook posts as well as an earlier draft of this story speculated it could be referring to the DVD sales and or digital downloads. However, it appears as if the number is actually referring to the number of Hunger Games Facebook fans.
According to The-Numbers.com, the current top selling DVD for 2012 is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 with 5.2 million copies sold. Its very possible that The Hunger Games could exceed this number and become the top selling DVD for 2012 in its first weekend of release.
Avatar sold 6.7 million DVDs and Blu-rays in its first four days of release, which seems to be within reach for The Hunger Games. As far as the best selling DVD of all time, Finding Nemo appears to still hold the record with reports from a couple years back putting the count at 40 million plus DVDs sold. While Finding Nemo is likely safe for now, with Hunger Games fans picking up multiple copies to get all the various exclusives that record might not even be safe for long.
 

DVDs Blu-ray disc rentals still surpass streaming
Streaming video may be cost-effective and convenient but consumers are still renting more movies via the mail and physical retailers.
People renting DVDs and ray discs through retail stores kiosks and Netflixs mail service totaled more than  percent of all movie rentals in the first half of the year according to NPD Group. In contrast, those renting digital movies via subscription streaming pay TV video on demand, and Internet VOD added up to only  percent.
Though physical discs still lead the rental landscape, their popularity has been waning. Rentals of DVDs and Blu-ray discs dropped by  New on DVD The Lorax. As brick-and-mortal video stores continue to fade away kiosks have taken their place with  percent of the physical rental market up  percent from last year.
Netflixs focus on streaming has also triggered a drop in physical rentals. The company recently announced that it had added streaming subscribers in the second quarter while losing customers of its DVD service.Overall digital movie rentals increased  percent over the first half of the year a rise that NPD attributed to the increased popularity of Netflixs Watch Instantly service. The companys streaming option accounted for  percent of all digital movie rentals. Pay TV video on demand took in  percent leaving Internet VOD withpercent.
Kiosk and subscription Internet streaming are generating strong user satisfaction ratings including future rental intent price and value which is reflected in market share gains NPD analyst Russ Crupnick said in a statement. Netflix is frequently the most popular video application on connected devices, so an increase in households with Web-connected Blu-ray disc players tablets, and smart TVs will lead to still more video streaming activity.

Creatures from Dr. Seuss and the Brothers Grimm are featured in this weeks new DVD releases.The Lorax, Grade A-minus: In an almost doomsday scenario, the film looks at what happens to the environment when the last Truffula tree has been cut down. Its a cautionary tale aimed dramatically at young and old.
That message is just as strong in this animated version of the book, but it has been cushioned slightly by a fun musical soundtrack and a budding love story. You will want to hug a tree after watching Dr. Seuss The Lorax and a few humans, too.From the opening number a musical flash mob to a fast-paced chase scene, the screenplay by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul keeps the essence of the original book while giving it a sense of fun. The pair who also wrote the very funny Despicable Me  have created a band of wonderful supporting characters who provide big laughs.This strong story is visually splendid.
Season One Grade A-minus: The approach to this NBC series is to have fairy tales based on real world creatures that now prowl the Pacific Northwest. Its up to Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt the last in the long line of creature fighters, to close the book on the evil creatures.
One reason this series is so good is Silas Weir Mitchell, who plays Burkhardt's wise-cracking sidekick and is far smarter about the ways of the weird than his police buddy. He brings a touch of humor even when the pair battle creatures that inspired the stories of The Three Little Pigs and Hansel and Gretel.

Exploding DVD player leaves three-year-old with severe burns
A Bendigo mother has spoken of the horror of learning her three-year-old daughter had suffered severe burns when a portable DVD player exploded in her lap in the family car.It kills me that I couldnt be there when she needed me Amber Lyons told the Bendigo Advertiser.
Its every parents nightmare first to be told that it had happened but secondly to have witnessed it.Mrs Lyons husband Heath and their daughter Ava were travelling towards Rochester on July  when he noticed a burning smell in the car.Mr Lyons pulled to the side of the road to investigate suspecting the smell had come from the car bonnet.
Suddenly he witnessed a flash inside the car and ran to the door to find his daughter screaming with some of her clothing on fire.Mr Lyons quickly pulled his daughter from the car and used her apple drink to extinguish the flames.
He said the explosion which originated from the sealed battery compartment of the device, left Avas padded seatbelt covers smouldering as well as a soft toy she had sitting with her. Ava, who was flown from Rochester to the Royal Childrens Hospital suffered partial thickness burns to her right hand, as well as superficial burns to her cheeks lips nose eye lids and eyebrows.
